Frequently asked Questions

General Things

  • Reach out through our contact form and we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have.

    • Interior plant installation and maintenance

    • Landscaping installation and maintenance, with an emphasis on using Richmond native plants

    • Outdoor container planting and seasonal rotations

    • Anything lawn care related, we’d love to help you replace your lawn with a garden, though <3

    • Hardscape and patio construction

    • Tree removal (we’ll plant them, though!)

    • Irrigation installation beyond simple drip lines or soaker hoses

    • Pest control for entire properties (only plant-specific issues we encounter)

    • Interior cleaning unrelated to plant care

We’re always happy to recommend folks we trust for these offerings, though!

  • Each visit is based on plant or garden needs. We may:

    • Water appropriately (not on a timer — based on soil moisture)

    • Prune, groom, and generally style

    • Fertilize. For indoor plants this typically happens with every watering.

    • Remove yellowing or damaged foliage or branches

    • Divide and transplant garden plants as appropriate

    • Inspect for pests or disease and treat as needed

    • Rotate interior plants for even growth

    • Clean containers and surrounding areas as needed

    • Adjust care seasonally

Some visits are quick, some are longer — we must flow with the plants as they require <3

  • To keep visits efficient and predictable, certain tasks are not automatically part of routine maintenance unless requested in advance. This includes

    • Repotting large plants

    • Major pruning or reshaping projects

    • Soil replacement projects

    • Landscape redesign

    • Irrigation repair

    • Moving heavy furniture to access plants

    • Emergency same-day visits

We’re happy to do many of these — they’re just scheduled separately so we can have the right amount of time and necessary materials.

  • Can I ask to be present for a visit?
Absolutely — just let us know and we’ll plan with you accordingly.

What if my door, gate, or building is locked and you can’t access the space?
We’ll notify you and return at the next visit window. Plants may decline if we cannot access them, so keeping entry instructions updated is important. You may still be charged for this site visit.

What about pets or alarm systems?
Please secure pets and provide current alarm instructions. We won’t enter if it feels unsafe for anyone — including your animals.

  • We typically communicate through email for project planning, quotes, and other important details. Otherwise, for things like day-of updates, we’ll text from our client management software.

  • Yes — when we provide ongoing maintenance.
If a plant declines due to our care, we replace it.

Plants are not covered under our warranty when

    • They were moved by someone other than Green Heron

    • Someone else watered or treated them

    • Lighting or environment changed without our approval

    • Weather or building conditions impacted their health

    Will the replacement look identical?
Not always. Plants are living things and availability changes. We replace with comparable, appropriate plants.

  • Do I water the plants?
If we’re maintaining them — no. Please don’t water, move, or treat them. Multiple caregivers cause most plant problems we see.

What if someone in my office/home waters them anyway?
We’ll help explain the care plan, but plants affected by outside care aren’t covered for replacement.

What if a plant starts looking bad?
Tell us! We monitor regularly, but early notice helps us correct issues quickly.

  • We may delay service if conditions are unsafe for plants or people. We’ll resume as soon as proper work conditions return.

  • Often yes — time and materials permitting. We’ll confirm before billing anything additional.

  • Sometimes — to track plant health and document service. We may also use photos of our work for our portfolio unless you ask us not to.

  • Yes — but plants perform best with ongoing care.

When we install without maintenance, responsibility for watering and monitoring transfers to the client after installation. We’ll still give guidance so you’re set up for success.

  • Please don’t! For larger requests or project changes, email is best so details don’t get missed. Quick day-of updates are fine through texts though.

  • If notifications are enabled, yes. You can opt in or out anytime.

Landscaping

  • Gardens can take up to 3 years to reach their fully intended shapes. Some stress, leaf drop, or seasonal appearance changes are normal in the first year during establishment.

  • Outdoor plants respond to nature — issues or plants dying because of unseasonable freezes, heat waves, and storms aren’t considered installation failure, but it’s very possible in our current climate. We guarantee plants that fail due to reasonable impacts of our care.

Full service terms are provided with all quotes and available upon request.
